Dalchini in English is known as Cinnamon and is a spice that comes from the inner bark of the tropical Cinnamomum tree. This bark is rolled into quills and sold as cinnamon quills.  


Ceylon Cinnamon or true cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka.  Real Cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon is very delicate, extremely brittle and has a sweet taste.  We Indians use both the whole dalchini and the powdered dalchini, but it is always preferable to use freshly powdered cinnamon for our recipes.  


Cinnamon contains an essential oil called cinnamaldehyde and this oil has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.  Cinnamon tea is an easy to prepare delicious beverage, that aids in weight loss, improve digestion, strengthen the immune system and regulates blood sugar.

This bark is rolled into quills and sold as cinnamon quills.  Real cinnamon is an expensive spice and is used a bark or as a powder in our recipes. Cinnamon quills is called Karuvapatta in  Malayalam.  

 

CEYLON CINNAMON: Ceylon Cinnamon or true cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka.  Ceylon Cinnamon is less common and expensive compared to the more common cassia, which is easily available.  Real Cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon is very delicate, extremely brittle and has a sweet taste. 

 

MAKE FRESHLY POWDERED CINNAMON:  We Indians use both the whole dalchini and the powdered dalchini, but it is always preferable to use freshly powdered cinnamon for our recipes.  Freshly powdered cinnamon adds a great aroma and spice to our cooking.   

 

BEST FOR CINNAMON TEA:  Cinnamon tea is an easy to prepare delicious beverage, that aids in weight loss, improve digestion, strengthen the immune system and regulates blood sugar.  Steep a cinnamon stick in boiling water, add a tea bag and honey to make a delicious and healthy Cinnamon tea.
